Treatment for sports injury

Acupuncture can greatly help with sports injury. But here are some steps that are important to ensure a good recovery. In the first 24-48 hours you will have to Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE) the affected area.  This will help to reduce the bruising and inflammation.

After this time you can start to repair your injury by doing gentle exercise followed by a gentle stretch.  After exercise use the RICE procedure again.  For ICE you would protect your skin from direct contact with the ice with some material.  For big muscles that get a lot of blood supply you can ice the area for up to 10 minutes and then repeat in an hour.  For tendons and ligaments which have a poor blood supply you must be careful not to over ice, so no more than 5 minutes and never on bare skin.  This will reduce the inflammation.
An important aspect of repair and healing is the flow of blood and energy to the area.  This must be encouraged and here are some suggestions;

  • Gentle exercise
  • Acupuncture
  • Magnetic therapy
  • Ultra sound massage
  • Electromagnetic heat lamp
